Colossians 3:13

“Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”

Forgiveness is not about others, its about our own spiritual growth. God commands that we forgive others and extend grace as we have been shown grace. This can be one of the hardest things we face in life. The pain and hurt that others have caused us is real and great. But, the pain of living with bitterness and unforgiveness can poison our souls and destroy us. When we forgive others, we are not saying what they did was OK but we are releasing it to God and letting go of its hold on us. Holding on to resentment does not allow us to heal and it does not allow God to work in our life the way He wants to. Having an unforgiving heart leads to bitterness and a heart that is bitter can not love as it ought to love. Love and forgiveness cannot be separated. If we choose to live out the love of God then forgiving is an option that cannot be avoided. Forgiving someone must be immediate but always remember that the healing and rebuilding of trust is going to take time. All of which the Lord will help us with as long as we continue to pray for strength and guidance.
