1 Corinthians 6:12

“All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be enslaved by anything.”

We all have the freedom to choose how we treat our bodies and what we put into it. Even though we have the freedom not all things are useful, or profitable for us. We should always ask the questions, is this something consistent with God’s commands? Does it glorify Him? And if it’s something we know to be sinful or harmful, we should ask “What will this do to my relationship with God? To my prayer life?” Unfortunately, many times temporary and physical pleasures are desired more strongly than spiritual joy. We start to develop addictions and habits which than we become enslaved to. This can be dangerous because persistent refusal to say no to an enslaving habit runs the risk of hardening our conscience so that we no longer feel guilty for that enslavement. And at this point our desires than become more important than God and His will for our life. Let us always remember not to be put under the authority of something, so that nothing else will take Christ’s place. The Lord calls our bodies “temples” and they should always be treated as such. God’s Word and God’s Spirit are our guides.
