1 John 5:21
Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.
Everyone is passionate about something, some people are passionate about material things, other people are passionate about their careers, hobbies, activities, or people etc. When something becomes so important to us that we eat, drink and breathe it, it can essentially become our God. Idol worship does not only consist of worshiping statues, an idol can be anything or anyone that takes the place of God in our lives. An idol can be something or someone that becomes our world and consumes our thoughts and time. God warned the prophet Ezekiel of this, “Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their hearts, and put before them that which causes them to stumble into iniquity. Should I let Myself be inquired of at all by them?” (Ezekiel 14:3). God wants our heart. But if that thing, if that pursuit, if that possession, or whatever it might be gets in the way of our relationship with Him, it could be an idol to us. God should always be at the forefront of our heart and thoughts and He should be placed above anything or anyone in our life. Let us be careful and avoid the sin of idolatry because not only does it interfere with our relationship with God but it may hinder our prayer life as well.
