Proverbs 17:22
A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.
A joyful heart is good medicine indeed. What does it mean to have to a joyful heart? It’s when we have a heart that holds on to the good things that happen to us. When we are grateful for all the good things God gives us in our life. When we can see the good when everyone else is thinking the worst. When we treasure the gifts of every day—life, health, friendships, faith, and more. When we have hearts that hold on to the promises of God and His constant care and provision. When we never seem to lose sight of the good things God is doing. When we have an inner ability to be grateful for all kinds of things that many people overlook. This doesn’t mean that we are never to be sad or sorrowful. We can certainly struggle with being down during tough times. We can cry. We can call out to God in pain. We can admit disappointment. But when we have a joyful heart we won’t let such things dominate us. It is physically, mentally and spiritually healthy for us to have a joyful heart and the affects exceed our own benefits and carry on to others. We become a breath of fresh air for others, a pleasant soul to be around. Our positivity becomes contagious and our attitudes admirable.
