The Fear of God

Proverbs 14:27

The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, turning a person from the snares of death.

God is love and He is merciful but He is also just and Holy. He is far more than we could possibly acknowledge and He is not to be trifled with. It is important to understand His character fully because wisdom comes when we learn to properly know and fear Him. As we grow in our understanding of God and His word, we better process our sin in the light of His holiness. We are far more able to stay the course marked out for us when we have a clear eyed view of our own wretched state. This leads us to see the gravity of what Jesus did for us on the cross and it humbles us. It also makes us exceedingly grateful. God’s grace will mean more to us when we feel the weight of our sin. This growing and reverent understanding and fear of God is an important safeguard to help us keep from sinning.  We minimize both our sin and God’s holiness when we fail to fear God so let’s seek to know God wholeheartedly and dive into the Bible to know Him completely.
